Man who attacked Salman Rushdie sentenced to 25 years in prison

Man Sentenced for Stabbing Salman Rushdie

A man was sentenced to 25 years on Friday for stabbing acclaimed British author Salman Rushdie in 2022. Hadi Mathal, aged 27, was convicted in February of murder and attempted assault related to the attack, which left Rushdie blind in one eye.

During an event organized by the Chotouka Association, Rushdie was attacked and subsequently airlifted to a hospital in northwestern Pennsylvania for treatment.

Rushdie’s 1988 novel, “The Satanic Verses,” ignited widespread protests and led to death threats, including a fatwa issued by Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The stabbing caused significant injuries to Rushdie’s liver, arms, and eyes.

In addition to the 25 years for the attack on Rushdie, Mathal received a seven-year sentence for injuring another individual present during the attack, which will be served concurrently.

Before the verdict was announced, Mathal made statements in court suggesting he held a grudge against Rushdie, describing him as someone who wanted to exert control over others. This perspective, which somewhat reflects a desire for authority, seems to highlight a troubling mindset.

The New Jersey native still faces federal terrorism charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Furthermore, Iran has denied any encouragement of attacks on Rushdie despite a $4 million bounty on his head, according to reports.

Rushdie described the horrifying experience of the attack, noting how surreal it felt to be confronted like that. He recalled seeing a figure in black rapidly approach him, a striking image that has evidently stayed with him.

In a poignant reflection, Rushdie expressed how the experience has altered his perception of life and death, illustrating the profound impact the incident has had on him.
