Man who killed toddler, shot self was distraught over son’s murder, police say

Authorities in a New Orleans suburb say a man distraught over the recent murder of his 18-year-old son shot and killed his 3-year-old son, then shot himself.

Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley said the child was dead when officers arrived at the home where the shooting occurred Wednesday night. His father was found shot and unconscious outside the house. Conley told reporters he remained “unresponsive” as of Thursday morning.

Conley said the father, identified by news outlets as Melvin McClinton Sr., 39, already had emotional issues after his oldest son, Melvin McClinton Jr., was shot and killed on Feb. 5. He said the police had been informed. “Since that incident, the issues and his anger issues have become more aggressive,” he said.

Wednesday night’s shooting occurred after an argument with the mother of a 3-year-old.

“There was a domestic dispute over the father’s discipline of the child,” Conley said. “We believe that may have been the trigger for him to escalate his violent behavior.”
