Texas Man with Cartel Ties Arrested Again
A Texas man, who allegedly has connections to a Mexican drug cartel, was arrested a second time on Monday after reportedly threatening a sheriff’s deputy and their family during a prior arrest.
John Christian Orozco, 25, was initially taken into custody on April 10 in El Paso after a traffic stop for allegedly running a red light. According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, officers detected the smell of alcohol during the stop and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence, which is a second-degree offense.
While he was in custody, Orozco allegedly made threats toward two officers, stating he could “give them the go-ahead,” which implies permission to harm someone, a term often used in criminal circles. The sheriff’s office reported, “He continued to make explicit threats, including intentions to seek out and harm law enforcement officers,” resulting in additional charges for obstruction or retaliation.
Orozco mentioned to authorities that he had been drinking due to the recent loss of his grandmother. Reports indicate he also claimed to be a “cartel executive” and hinted at having an active warrant for attempted murder related to a U.S. marshal.
During the arrest, he nonchalantly stated, “It’s over, let’s enjoy the last few weeks,” and claimed to have previously given the “green light” to El Paso police officers.
Initially booked with a bail set at $12,500, Orozco was arrested once more on Monday after a judge found sufficient cause to issue an additional warrant for obstruction or retaliation due to his threats against the deputy. His bail was then set at $10,000 for the new charges.
Further comments have been sought from the sheriff’s office regarding the case.
