Manchin says he believes some Inflation Reduction Act portions ‘almost’ have to stay under Trump

Sen. Joe Manchin (IW., Va.) said in an interview on Sunday that he believes some parts of the Inflation Control Act (IRA) should remain in place “for the most part” through President-elect Trump's administration. said.

“There are things like tax credits for nuclear power and biofuels. Do you think some of it… some of this will survive?” CBS News' Margaret Brennan asked Manchin about “Face the Nation.”

“I think it almost has to be,” Manchin responded.

The IRA is a massive health care, tax, and climate change package passed in 2022 that features hundreds of billions of dollars worth of tax credits for issues like renewable energy, electric vehicles, and domestic manufacturing. IRA provisions are at stake in the House, Senate, and House of Representatives next year.

“And most of the investments are in areas that are considered red states. Republican states. It just depends on what they do and how they operate, like West Virginia.” Manchin said in an IRA interview on CBS News.

“And we didn’t hear much about that from the Democratic ticket—” Brennan said.

“They couldn't talk about it,” Manchin responded.

“I kept saying, 'Can't you just tell me exactly what the bill did?'” Manchin said.

“They were saying, 'Renewable, renewable, renewable,'” Manchin said.

Some Republicans have said they don't want to remove all IRA incentives for low-carbon energy, but some, such as electric vehicle subsidies, could be cut.

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) previously said, “I think some of them should be eliminated, especially the tax credit for the purchase of electric vehicles, especially those with incomes up to $500,000; It’s a tax credit for the station,” he previously said. The Hill.

Hill has reached out to the White House, Trump's transition team and Vice President Harris' office for comment.
