High-Rise Building in Manhattan Stabilized After Safety Concerns

A high-rise undergoing renovations in Manhattan was stabilized on Tuesday after safety evaluations indicated it was at risk of collapsing. Nearby buildings were evacuated, but those measures have since been lifted.

New York City Department of Buildings Commissioner Ahmed Tigani shared at a press conference that they had been keeping a close watch on the structure and had not observed any further movement during that time.

The situation gained attention earlier when a buckled pillar was found in the building, which, built in the 1970s, is being converted into luxury apartments from commercial space.

Emergency responders arrived at about 8 a.m., quickly evacuating construction workers and residents from nearby buildings, including schools, diplomatic missions, and several hotels located in the busy Midtown area.

Mayor Zoran Mamdani described the building’s state as “extremely serious,” mentioning multiple cracks and sagging floors.

City officials have been assessing safety throughout the building to see if they can address the issues with the buckled columns from ground level.

This building is situated near well-known landmarks like the Chrysler Building and the United Nations Headquarters.

Fire Chief John Esposito commented that, should a collapse occur, it would likely be localized rather than widespread, attributing this to the steel construction of the building.
