Manhattan's top federal prosecutor announced Monday that he plans to step down from his post next month to allow President-elect Donald Trump's chosen successor to lead his powerful administration.
Damian Williams announced on December 13th that he will resign from his position as United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
“Today is a bittersweet day for me,” Williams said in a statement.

“It's bittersweet because I'm leaving my dream job leading an organization I love that has some of the best public servants in the world,” he continued. “I am confident that I am resigning at a time when the Secretariat is functioning at an incredibly high level, upholding and exceeding its already high standards of excellence, integrity and independence. It's a pleasure.”
Williams, who was appointed by President Biden in November 2021, has pursued several prominent Democrats during his term, including former New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
Mr. Williams' deputy, Edward Y. Kim, will serve as acting U.S. attorney.
His announcement comes after President Trump announced earlier this month that he planned to replace him with former Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Jay Clayton.
