Manhunt underway in California for individual accused of samurai sword attack

California Man on the Run After Samurai Sword Attack

A man in California is currently evading authorities after reportedly using a sword resembling a samurai’s to fatally assault someone at a party, according to police.

Jonathan Bays, aged 41, allegedly attempted to attack another individual during a gathering at the Creekside Apartments in Mariposa on Saturday, as stated by Sheriff Jeremy Brees. Bays is accused of using a “large samurai-style sword” to inflict injuries on the victim, targeting the wrist, hand, head, and shoulder.

Following the incident, Bays fled the scene and was last spotted walking on a road that leads to a prison. Authorities have labeled him as “armed and dangerous.”

In a video update, Sheriff Brees described the event as “isolated,” noting that an “altercation” had erupted among individuals in the apartment. One victim required helicopter transport to a nearby medical facility.

“This was a dispute between individuals, and unfortunately he chose to use the sword for his actions,” Brees commented.

Interestingly, he added that all individuals present in the apartment had been engaging with methamphetamine and other substances, referring to it as a “party.”

Bayes is reportedly a transitional alien from Idaho and has an active warrant related to parole violations that will take effect in 2025. Records from the Idaho Department of Corrections indicate that he was previously convicted of sexual assault against a minor aged between 16 and 17.

Authorities report that Bays is about 5’11” tall, weighing around 180 pounds. During his last sighting, he wore a black sweater, black shoes, a camo hat, and tan pants. He is known to go by several names, including Mike, Michael, and Aaron.

As of Wednesday, the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office is utilizing helicopters and K-9 units, with support from other agencies, to assist in the search for Bays.

Anyone with information regarding Bays’ location is urged to contact the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office at (209) 966-3615.
