A recent study indicates that while a majority of Americans back President Trump’s immigration objectives, they feel the administration’s methods are perhaps a bit excessive.
Polls from the Wall Street Journal, released on Monday, show that 62% of US adults favor the deportation of immigrants residing in the country illegally.
However, many respondents expressed dissent regarding two specific strategies used to enforce Trump’s stringent immigration policies. Both the mass deportation of individuals without due process and relocating immigrants to prisons in their home countries saw a 58% disapproval rate.
About 60% of independent voters believe the White House has been too aggressive in deporting immigrants without sufficient evidence of their illegal status.
Support for Trump’s immigration stance is robust among GOP voters, with 90% in favor, while only 11% of Republicans think the administration’s actions are excessive.
Nearly two-thirds, or 62%, of participants stated they agree with deporting as many individuals as possible, regardless of any criminal background. The survey also highlighted that about one-third of US adults perceive ICE as primarily deporting immigrants already within the country.
Earlier this month, a Harvard Cap/Harris poll revealed that 60% of voters are in favor of Trump’s initiative to secure the border. It also showed that 75% of Americans support the administration’s stance against unauthorized immigrants
The Wall Street Journal poll was conducted from July 16-20, surveying 1,500 registered voters, with a margin of error of 2.5 percentage points.
