Survey Reveals Significant Support for Immigration Shutdown in the UK
Nearly half of UK voters are in favor of halting immigration entirely and believe that a major deportation campaign should be initiated, according to a survey by YouGov.
The polling data indicates that 45% of those surveyed support the notion of not recognizing any more new immigrants and are calling for the removal of many migrants who have arrived in recent years.
This sentiment appears to be particularly strong among supporters of Nigel Farage’s Reform British Party. Farage has promised a complete freeze on all legal immigration, asserting that all illegal immigrants should be deported. Notably, 86% of supporters of this party back these measures.
Interestingly, over a quarter of voters from left-leaning parties, including Labour and the Liberal Democrats, also express support for significant immigration restrictions.
YouGov’s research shows that immigration ranks higher than other concerns, with 56% of respondents identifying it as a priority issue.
While Brexit was initially framed as a means to control immigration and regain border sovereignty, subsequent immigration reforms introduced by Boris Johnson’s government have been criticized for creating pathways that led to record-high numbers of new arrivals.
The current government, regardless of party affiliation, has resisted proposals to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights, further complicating the immigration landscape.
Additionally, the number of illegal immigrants crossing the English Channel from France has surged, with around 25,000 arriving on UK shores this year alone, resulting in over 170,000 illegals entering the country since tracking began in 2018.
This influx has strained the asylum system, leading to the distribution of many immigrants across various taxpayer-funded accommodations, including hotels. Tensions arose last month in Epping when a local incident involving illegal immigrants led to public protests against immigrant housing.
The YouGov poll attempts to highlight that the anger directed at illegal immigrants may stem from misunderstandings, noting that about 47% of the public believes there are more illegal immigrants than legal ones.
Professor Matt Goodwin has suggested that this perception may be driven by the relatively underestimated number of legal immigrants. Last year alone saw around 948,000 new legal arrivals.
Goodwin anticipates that the continuous influx of foreigners will significantly reshape the UK’s demographic landscape, hinting that by 2063, white Britons could become a minority within their own country.
