Vigil for Charlie Kirk Draws Hundreds in Washington, D.C.

One mourner, Johnson, expressed the emotional blend of feelings felt throughout the evening. “It was really a mix of sadness, anger, and, I think, fear,” he remarked. He also noted that Kirk wouldn’t have wanted attendees to succumb to despair, emphasizing that he’d have preferred the opposite.
The vigil, held near the suspected gunman’s hometown in Utah, left a notable impression, with many reflecting on Kirk’s impactful life.
“To truly honor his memory, we need to live as Charlie did,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, conveying the essence of Kirk’s legacy.
Among those who spoke were members of the Trump administration, including White House Press Director Caroline Leavitt and National Intelligence Director Tarshi Gabbard. Gabbard shared heartfelt thoughts, acknowledging the profound influence Kirk had in his brief life and expressing hope that his legacy continues to thrive. “Ultimately, the time we have here is fleeting,” she added. “We all have our moment, sooner or later.”
Leavitt shared personal reflections, describing Kirk’s sincerity and commitment to family as a significant part of his legacy. “He inspired young people to marry and start families, which I believe is vital,” she stated.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recounted his bond with Kirk, having met during a podcast in 2021. They quickly became close, sharing personal stories about navigating grief and loss. Kennedy recounted a poignant conversation with his mother after losing his brother, emphasizing the idea that while the pain of loss may never diminish, it’s crucial to grow and expand oneself around that sorrow.
