Rubio Calls for Ban on Fall Weddings During College Football Season

As summer winds down, sports enthusiasts are gearing up for college football’s return. In the midst of various discussions about the future of college sports, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has identified a unique challenge that he thinks deserves attention: scheduling conflicts, particularly with weddings.

In a light-hearted moment, Rubio suggested that President Donald Trump should consider banning weddings on days when college football games are scheduled. He humorously labeled such weddings as a “scourge” against the beloved sport.

At a recent White House Cabinet meeting, Rubio expressed frustration concerning couples who hold their weddings on Saturdays, which typically feature a packed college football schedule. “It’s a tragedy for people to get married during college football season,” Rubio remarked. “It’s splitting families. I’m not sure if we’ll see executive orders on this, but there are several months in the year that are wedding-friendly. So, I just felt I had to say that.”

Rubio, who has been married to his wife, Janet Dodeves, since 1998, formerly served as a U.S. Senator before his current role.

In college football action, South Florida recently took down No. 25 Boise State, marking the start of the 2025 college football season. Meanwhile, Cincinnati and Nebraska faced off at Arrowhead Stadium for an unranked matchup.
