Marco Rubio reassures European partners of commitment to transatlantic unity at Munich Security Conference: 'We belong to one civilization - Western civilization'

Marco Rubio Addresses National Security Council in Munich

In Munich, Germany, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the significant bond shared between the US and its European allies during a speech to the National Security Council. He highlighted the importance of the transatlantic relationship, particularly in light of shared Western values.

The annual Munich Security Conference, which happened to coincide with Valentine’s Day, featured Rubio speaking for approximately 30 minutes.

Rubio stated that America’s future is “intertwined” with that of Europe, asserting that one cannot thrive independently of the other.

He expressed that the topic of national security isn’t merely a set of technical questions. It’s far more personal. “The first fundamental question we have to answer is: What exactly are we protecting?” he posed. “An army fights for people, a nation, a way of life. We defend a proud civilization, confident in its future.”

Rubio acknowledged Europe’s role in nurturing the “seeds of freedom” that contributed to the establishment of the United States and the broader Western civilization.

He added, “The United States and Europe belong together. Though founded 250 years ago, our roots trace back to this continent. We share a deep bond forged through history, culture, and sacrifice.”

He conveyed that sometimes American advice may seem a bit direct, indicating that this comes from a place of genuine concern. “We care deeply about your future and our future,” Rubio remarked.

Addressing the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, he mentioned that while many issues have been resolved, the outstanding challenges remain complex and dire. “I don’t know if the Russians are serious about ending the war,” Rubio confessed, admitting uncertainty about their intentions.

He pointed out that additional US sanctions on Russian oil have been imposed, along with efforts to encourage India to halt its oil purchases from Russia.

“We’re not sure about the outcomes, but is there a resolution that both Ukraine and Russia could accept?” he asked, reflecting on the intricacies of the situation.

He also noted that military officials from both sides recently met for the first time in years, indicating a potential step forward.

Rubio concluded by expressing a desire for a future-oriented alliance, lamenting the idea of leaving a legacy that isn’t stronger or prouder for the next generation. “The Alliance is ready to protect our people and our interests, preserving the freedom to shape our own destiny,” he asserted.

In a related tweet, he stated, “We want allies who can protect themselves from any adversary and who are proud of their culture and country.”
