Rubio Criticizes Maduro Regime Amid U.S. Pressure
In a recent interview, Secretary of State Marco Rubio strongly condemned Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s administration, aligning with President Donald Trump’s increasing calls for Maduro to step down.
Rubio stated, “The Maduro government lacks legitimacy.” He described it as a “transshipment organization” for narcotics, allowing drugs from Colombia to be trafficked through Venezuela, facilitated by regime officials who let these substances leave the country via planes and ships heading to the U.S.
The Trump administration is intensifying its focus on suspected drug smuggling operations near Venezuela, even reinforcing military presence in the area.
Rubio mentioned, “Venezuela will face severe sanctions if it continues to deny its own citizens.” He elaborated that the president has authorized a regional counternarcotics initiative, noting that Maduro’s displeasure indicates ongoing drug trafficking activities from Venezuela.
The administration is also planning to discontinue Temporary Protected Status for around 600,000 Venezuelans currently residing in the U.S.
Rubio accused the Maduro government of openly collaborating with drug traffickers, asserting that its actions contribute to regional instability in South America. He expressed concern over over 8 million Venezuelans fleeing to neighboring countries due to the ongoing crises caused by Maduro’s regime.
Discussing Maduro’s unreliability, Rubio said, “If you’re looking to engage with him, good luck. He has breached every agreement he has ever established.” He cited five agreements made with various political bodies over the last decade, all of which, he claimed, were broken by Maduro.
The Secretary of State referenced a failed agreement between former President Joe Biden and Maduro, which has seemingly been overlooked. He recounted how Maduro sought the release of family members tied to drug trafficking in exchange for promises of fair elections, which he never delivered on.
Rubio concluded by asserting that while Trump continues to seek a resolution, it’s crucial to have a partner who will honor agreements. “We reached a deal with China, but Maduro has never followed through.” The ongoing situation remains complicated, but Rubio expressed confidence in the administration’s commitment to finding a path forward.
