Marco Rubio: The Pope Is Not a Politician

Pope’s Role in Immigration Debate Discussed by Rubio

During a press conference in Antalya, Turkey, Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that, while the Pope may be covered like a political figure, he is fundamentally a spiritual leader. This came in response to Pope Leo’s appeal for greater respect for immigration.

Rubio said, “It’s important to understand that the Pope’s role isn’t a political office, but rather a spiritual one that encompasses social teachings aligned with faith.” However, he expressed that these teachings don’t necessarily align with national policies. He argued against mass migration, highlighting the dangers it poses, particularly when a significant number of individuals enter illegally. “It’s not compassionate to those being trafficked or to citizens who are genuinely suffering,” he stated. He pointed out that a rise in illegal immigrants can lead to serious crime, which ultimately affects victims.

Rubio further discussed the Pope’s context, noting that he is secure within the walls of the Vatican, which historically provided protection against invasions. “The Vatican has established rules regarding who can enter and stay, reflecting a need to maintain sovereignty,” he added.

Pope Leo has made it clear that he understands the difference between the idealism of religious leaders and the practical needs of politicians in diverse societies. “Migration is a complicated issue, not just for the U.S., but globally,” he noted in a past sermon, advocating for respectful treatment of people while addressing the problem from both sides.

Rubio pointed out the U.S.’s history of being a welcoming nation, noting that each year around one million people legally immigrate. However, he cautioned against the unsustainability of allowing millions to enter illegally, emphasizing that it isn’t fair to Americans.

He also mentioned the fatalities that have arisen from strict immigration rules established under President Biden, suggesting these laws disproportionately affected ordinary citizens and shifted wealth toward immigrants and investors.

In light of Catholic teachings, Vice President J.D. Vance highlighted the moral obligation of politicians to prioritize their communities. He spoke about the Christian idea of “Order of love,” where individuals should first care for their families, then their neighbors, and eventually the broader community.

Despite significant opposition, Trump continues to secure support for his immigration policies, with recent polls indicating that a substantial percentage of self-identified Catholics favor reducing migration over increasing it.
