Marcus Semien Adjusts to New Team in Spring Training

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Marcus Semien is still getting used to his new team.

The Mets’ second baseman, who joined from Texas in a trade for Brandon Nimmo during the offseason, is aiming not just to solidify a restructured infield but also to regain his hitting rhythm for the 2023 season.

His batting challenges have been noted widely, and while the Mets don’t expect him to hit at an All-Star level, there’s concern about the potential for a batting resurgence from the 35-year-old.

However, if he focuses on delivering solid defense, the Mets are likely to embrace that.

The situation became more complicated with Francisco Lindor undergoing hand surgery for a stress fracture in his left hamate, which has somewhat stalled their collaboration in the field. Still, they expect to ramp up their training soon, as Lindor may resume defensive drills this Friday.

“His hands look pretty good,” Semien mentioned. “He’s one of the best players in the league, and I’m eager to see him on the field. He’s someone we can take defensive cues from as well.”

Each player brings a wealth of experience, yet they’re hoping to master the nuances of playing together before the regular season starts.

“It’s really important,” Semien pointed out about their chemistry. “We’re both seasoned players with a lot of baseball under our belts. Being able to communicate and understand who will take which balls, making sure we’re positioned correctly—it’s something we need to nail down quickly.”

He also expressed some doubts about synchronizing with the new infield leaders, Kai Correa and Tim Leiper.

“We’ll make a good duo,” Semien said confidently.

While there may be uncertainties at the plate, Semien did hit a home run during Thursday’s 5-0 victory over the Astros at Palm Beach Ballpark, which stands out as a positive development.

“We know he can do a lot when he’s at full health, both defensively and offensively,” said manager Carlos Mendoza.

Mendoza also highlighted that there are adjustments to Semien’s posture that might positively influence his swing, mentioning that the coaching team is continually assessing ways to help him return to his peak performance. Semien and the staff are dedicated to making strides in this area.

With expectations of benefiting from his interactions with offensive talents like Lindor, Juan Soto, and rookie Bo Bichette, Semien expressed optimism. “They provide valuable feedback,” he said. “This is a great environment for hitters.”
