Margaret Qualley’s Journey from Southern Roots to Stardom

Margaret Qualley has embraced her Southern upbringing to shape her career in acting. In a recent feature from Vanity Fair, she shared that her childhood, despite being the daughter of actress Andie MacDowell and former model Paul Qualley, was relatively ordinary.

Growing up in a family that enjoyed grits, sweet tea, and frequent visits to Waffle House, Qualley and her siblings, Laney and Justin, had a taste of typical Southern life. In an interview with the Evening Standard, she noted how she felt raised in “probably the only Hollywood actress in Asheville.”

“I always thought it was normal,” Qualley said about her life with her mother. “But I also knew it was weird.” It’s a curious mix; she feels fortunate and understands the oddity of her situation. “After a while, I went to a regular school, made friends, and lived a somewhat normal life,” she reflected, adding that her mother’s film roles occasionally brought her into contact with stars like Gerard Depardieu.

Qualley emphasized how her upbringing in Montana, before relocating to North Carolina, had a profound impact on her acting. Most of her early years were committed to competitive dance. By high school, she was at a boarding school, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where her competitive dancing experience has influenced her performance style. “I recall my teacher saying, ‘You should dance like a dove, but you dance like a peacock,’” Qualley recalled, interpreting the comment as a critique of seeking attention.

At 16, she transitioned from competitive dance to the acting world, moving to New York City and signing with IMG. By her twenties, she began to feel the pressure of the industry. “I was in control of my body, my schedule, it dictated my life,” she mentioned, admitting that she later began auditioning for acting roles, inspired by her mother’s success.

Qualley’s personal life, especially her marriage to Jack Antonoff, has been kept mostly private. They met at a party in 2021 and tied the knot two years later. Commenting on their relationship, she remarked, “I’ve always been romantic, always looking for someone who matched my vibe, and that was Jack.”

In a 2025 interview with Cosmopolitan, Qualley explained how her “Southern girl etiquette” helped win over Antonoff. She described herself as old-fashioned. “Before we were married, I never texted him twice. Now, he’s like my human diary,” she said, reflecting how their dynamic has evolved.

Qualley feels “safe and comfortable” with Jack, describing a sense of loneliness in her previous relationships. “I don’t feel that anymore,” she shared, emphasizing the security he brings into her life.

Admitting to struggling with the desire to be someone’s ideal partner in the past, she recognized she couldn’t pretend with Jack. Qualley indicated he embodies what she’s been envisioning for years, recalling her childhood crush on Adam Sandler and how she sees that essence manifested in Antonoff.
