New Research Highlights Risks of Cannabis Use

Concerns about the health risks associated with cannabis use are gaining attention, especially following a recent study that points to potential negative health effects.

This study, a meta-analysis conducted by researchers in France and published in the *Journal of Heart*, examined multiple earlier studies to explore the relationship between cannabis use and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).

The researchers reviewed data from over 400 million patients represented in 24 prior studies, including both cross-sectional and cohort studies. Notably, one of these studies focused specifically on medical cannabis.

Growing Cannabis Use Among Seniors

Interestingly, despite these health risks, the number of seniors using cannabis has increased significantly. The findings indicated a considerable rise in the risk of serious cardiovascular issues: a 29% higher chance of experiencing a heart attack, a 20% increased risk of stroke, and a twofold increase in the likelihood of cardiovascular-related death.

The analysis also highlighted that individuals who use cannabis weekly face more elevated risks.

Several studies confirmed a heightened likelihood of acute heart attacks among users. In one case, risks were noted among a younger demographic, specifically those aged 15 to 22, while another study highlighted risks for individuals who partook in cannabis at least once a week.

Dementia and Hospital Visits Linked to Cannabis Use

One major study from a French hospital database found that cannabis use was a more significant predictor of heart attacks than other illicit drugs, including cocaine and opioids. Another analysis evaluated the connection between cannabis and acute coronary syndrome in around 15,000 patients aged between 18 and 54.

An evaluation conducted in the UK Biobank revealed that women were at a notably higher risk of cardiovascular death associated with cannabis compared to men.

While the overall analysis did not find significant associations, it did identify increased risks for younger patients aged 18 to 36. Furthermore, the data suggested that cannabis use could boost all-cause mortality rates, particularly among those who had suffered a heart attack before turning 50.

Safety Concerns About Medical Cannabis

Medical marijuana can offer relief for various conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and cancer. However, excessive use can lead to health complications, especially in older adults.

Research Limitations

The authors of the French review did acknowledge certain limitations in their findings. They found that the prevalence of cocaine and opioids was minimal in comparison to cannabis use, and not all studies effectively reported marijuana exposure.

Additionally, they noted potential biases in patient-reported outcomes and acknowledged issues like data duplication and limited time frames. As they explained, “Studies that rely on patient investigations often face substantial biases regarding exposure and misclassification of outcomes.”

Fox News senior medical analyst Dr. Mark Siegel commented on this situation during an appearance in early June. He pointed out that, despite the risks, more seniors are using cannabis than ever.

Dr. Siegel emphasized that regular cannabis use could be hazardous if not monitored. He mentioned that using too many gummies could potentially heighten anxiety.

He’s particularly concerned about the impact on lung health and noted that cannabis usage might accelerate dementia and alter behavior.

In his analysis, he likened the effects of marijuana use to those of smoking concerning heart and lung health.

In summary, while there are potential benefits to cannabis, especially in medicinal contexts, the associated risks, particularly for older adults, should not be overlooked. There’s a pressing need for more substantial research to fully understand the implications of cannabis use on health, especially cardiovascular health.
