The Mariners have accomplished something that was unthinkable just two years ago.
Seattle placed longtime first baseman Ty France on waivers on Sunday, according to multiple reports.
The 30-year-old was an All-Star in 2022, but his production has dipped considerably this year, batting just .223 with 31 RBI and a -0.4 Wins per Replacement rating in 88 games.
If France isn’t acquired by another team, he could be returned to Seattle and assigned to the minor leagues, although he has the right to prevent demotion based on his years with the team.
If he declines that option, he can become a free agent.
France has spent the past five seasons with the Mariners, leading the team in hits and RBIs while also ranking in the top three in doubles, home runs, walks, games played and at-bats.
In addition to their declining offensive power, France’s defensive ability has also deteriorated significantly this year.
His -8 outs above average at first base is the second-worst in baseball behind only Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays.
With baseball’s trade deadline just eight days away, France could be a cheap, veteran hitter for a team looking for an experienced first baseman or designated hitter.
France’s predicament became a microcosm of the Mariners’ entire offensive season.
Seattle owns the lowest team batting average (.218) and highest strikeout rate (28.0 percent) in baseball.
However, the Mariners continued to perform well this year, finishing tied for first in the American League West with a 53-48 record.
Seattle once held a commanding lead in the division by a wide margin but has lost five of its last six games, including dropping two of three against the Astros this weekend.
In France’s absence, Seattle will likely use Luke Raley and Tyler Locklear, who was promoted in June, at first base.
