Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lawler clash over tax requests.

Rep. Greene Targets Vulnerable House Republican

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has taken aim at one of the most at-risk House Republicans as he, along with several colleagues from blue states, indicates a willingness to oppose President Trump’s major policy initiative.

On Wednesday, Greene stirred controversy among House Republican leaders by advocating for an increased cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions in the Chamber of Commerce’s proposed “one big beautiful bill.”

The tax section of this legislation received approval from the House Committee after extensive deliberations, featuring a $30,000 cap on SALT deductions. Representatives like Lawler, from affluent suburban districts, claim this amount fails to adequately address the local tax burdens they face.

Amidst negotiations with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), Lawler and several other members of the SALT Caucus are pushing for a higher cap. Johnson has expressed optimism about a potential agreement.

However, Greene cautioned her colleagues on X, urging them to disregard Lawler’s insights. “He’s usually not the go-to guy for the best ideas,” she remarked.

Greene added, “If the $30,000 SALT deduction isn’t sufficient for those making under $400,000, then folks will have to either vote for Republicans in New York or reconsider where they live. The rest of America shouldn’t have to bear the brunt of the difference. Plus, Mike Lawler is jeopardizing his own seat,” she stated.

Lawler is among several House Republicans facing challenges in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. While he is recognized as a rising star in New York’s GOP, his district, which includes several suburbs of New York City, could see strong opposition against Republicans due to dissatisfaction with Trump.

Lawler quickly countered Greene’s comments, warning that her internal conflict could jeopardize the GOP’s narrow majority. “It’s surprising how the ‘Jewish Space Laser’ woman is once again clueless,” he expressed.

“And by the way, it’s because Republicans like me have secured our seats,” he added.
