Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney stated that the longstanding economic connections with the US are coming to a close, and Ottawa has committed to reacting “strongly” as President Trump’s new tariffs targeting the northern region and other nations “are no longer in play.”
“With the advancement of our economy, our previous ties with the United States are coming to an end regarding security and military collaboration,” Carney announced during a press briefing on Thursday.
“We can gain significantly more than foreign entities, including the US. This predicament provides a chance to bolster our capabilities domestically. Achieving this demands considerable effort and focused determination from Canadians, businesses, and government personnel. Effective April 2.
Trump remarked on Wednesday that auto components not sourced in the US would face tariffs, asserting that they would “centralize automotive production in one locality.”
The president contended that the fresh tariffs would spur job creation and prompt foreign auto manufacturers to shift production to the US in the near term. These new tariffs could potentially increase automobile prices.
“We must redirect our trade relations, and undertake tasks we once thought impossible at a pace unseen for generations,” Carney commented on Thursday.
Kearney responded similarly to Trump’s recent tariff declarations on Wednesday, labeling it as a “direct assault” on Canadian laborers.
“This is a blatant attack, and to clarify, it is an outright assault on the very worker I addressed this morning, while I was standing on the Ambassador Bridge, a representation and a tangible link amidst the challenging ties between our two nations, a shared heritage, a commercial connection, and a disrupted process.
Trump retaliated early in the day with a true proclamation, cautioning that if the European Union’s “collaboration” with Canada “imposes detriment” on the US economy, considerable tariffs could be enforced accordingly.
“Should the European Union collaborate with Canada to inflict economic damage upon the US, substantial tariffs that far exceed what is currently proposed will be enacted on both parties to safeguard the most significant allies each nation has ever had,” Trump stated. I articulated this on Thursday morning.
The Canadian PM asserted on Thursday that Ottawa will counter the ongoing trade conflict with strategies that will yield the “largest” repercussions for the US while having the “least” effect on its neighboring country.
“We will counter US tariffs with our own retaliatory trade measures that will impose the greatest repercussions in the United States while minimizing the effect in Canada,” Carney declared. “We will shield laborers and sectors during these challenging times, but most importantly, we will forge a new economy in Canada. Our focus will be on building Canada robustly.”
