Mark Hamill Contemplates Leaving the U.S. Over Trump’s Presidency
Actor Mark Hamill, best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars,” recently shared with British newspapers that President Donald Trump’s election made him consider moving out of the United States. He expressed to his wife the possibility of relocating to either London or Ireland.
Hamill, who is also recognized for voicing the Joker in various “Batman” adaptations, has become a prominent liberal voice in Hollywood. In an interview with a Times contributor, Matt Rudd, it was noted that Hamill seems to be more engaged in digital debates rather than physical conflicts. Rudd humorously suggested avoiding the topic of Trump until later in their conversation to prevent it from dominating the discussion.
In his extensive dialogue with a British newspaper, Hamill opened up about the challenges he faced post-election. An avid supporter of Joe Biden, he expressed his struggles with accepting the realities of the Trump administration. Interestingly, he mentioned that he copes with the political climate by imagining it as a dramatic political thriller.
He articulated, “The only way I can deal with it… is to look at it like a thick, vast political novel. It’s funny because it’s chaotic yet humorous.” He reflected on the immense implications of the Trump era, humorously considering ideas like making Canada the 51st state.
Hamill remains optimistic, stating, “I still believe there are more honest and decent people than the Maga crowd.” He added that, if he ever loses that belief, he would indeed contemplate moving to England.
During the interview, he recalled a conversation with his wife after Trump’s re-election, where he gave her an ultimatum: London or Ireland. Her thoughtful reply came a week later, reflecting on the absurdity of being asked to leave their home country.
The White House responded to Hamill’s remarks, suggesting that he could enjoy the successes that Trump has promised the nation, while subtly mocking his speculation about relocating. The spokesperson noted that he might just end up in the same place as Rosie O’Donnell.
