Mark Pope, the head coach of the University of Kentucky, might be feeling a bit regretful following recent events.
After Kentucky’s narrow 75-74 defeat against Auburn on Saturday, a conversation between Pope and athletic director Mitch Barnhart was unexpectedly recorded by reporters who were present at the press conference. Apparently, Pope expressed some frustrations: “Mitch, if people like that mom are going to fine me, forget about it,” he said. “We didn’t even address how they misled us.”
This led to the Southeastern Conference issuing a $25,000 fine on Tuesday due to a breach of league rules.
“The Southeastern Conference has publicly reprimanded University of Kentucky men’s basketball coach Mark Pope, and he now faces a $25,000 fine for his remarks about officials after the game at Auburn,” the SEC stated. “These comments violated SEC Bylaw 10.5.3 related to Sportsmanship and the Secretary’s rule regarding Public Criticism of Officials, which prohibits public criticism of officials by coaches, players, and staff.”
Pope appeared quite irked over a controversial offensive foul on Colin Chandler, who made contact with an Auburn player during an inbounds play. This allowed Auburn to regain control of the ball with just 14 seconds remaining, leading to a buzzer-beater that clinched the win for them.
In response to questions about his team’s performance, Pope initially took a cautious approach. “Well, we’re not really able to discuss officiating,” he commented. “But you all witnessed it. I think there’s often a personal element involved. I can’t comment on the referees, and I won’t. It’s just disappointing. That call didn’t decide the game. We’re capable of winning on our own.”
Pope then emphasized the team’s determination to maintain control of the game: “Regardless of how personal things may seem or how unfair it feels, we won’t relinquish control to anyone, especially not the fans, nor anyone else involved. We won’t allow anyone to undermine our power or take control. We accept no excuses, no matter the surrounding circumstances. We will not surrender our power; it doesn’t matter how disgraceful or unacceptable the situation might be.”
This loss was Kentucky’s third consecutive defeat, with two of those against ranked teams. Currently, they find themselves tied for sixth in the SEC standings, sporting an 8-6 record in conference play, with only two weeks left until the conference tournament.
