Mark Vientos’ Trade Rumors Heat Up
San Diego – Mark Vientos seems to be at the center of trade discussions. Starting Trade Deadline Week, he played as though he wants to stay put.
The Mets’ front office took notice of his performance, recalling last year’s successful season as they contemplate their busy infield, which also includes Brett Batty and Ronnie Mauricio.
After Vientos initially had a home run stolen by Fernando Tatis Jr., he made sure to connect a few feet deeper into right center for his next one.
During the 2024 season, Vientos hit an impressive 27 home runs in 111 games, despite facing a 23-game stretch without any. His latest hit in five innings marked his seventh homer in 74 games this season.
The 25-year-old has struggled with confidence, and his manager, Carlos Mendoza, acknowledged that Vientos isn’t fully satisfied with his performance this season.
“But I also understand that he has the opportunity,” Mendoza said before the game. “When he’s on the lineup, he can help us win games. He continues to work hard and make adjustments.”
If the club retains Vientos, it could be due to his potential, power, and breakout season, but they might also explore trade options.
Finding a place for Vientos in the lineup is tricky; he’s not a strong defender, especially with Batty and Mauricio showing more promise. However, if his batting continues to improve, he may solidify his spot as a designated hitter or third baseman.
“He’s a really good player, and we’re going to need him,” Mendoza noted.
The Mets still have uncertainties surrounding Paul Blackburn, who recently pitched well in Triple-A Syracuse but has been sidelined due to a right shoulder issue since late June. He was expected to visit Citi Field on Tuesday for further evaluation.
“We need to assess how he feels,” Mendoza said about Blackburn.
Meanwhile, Tyler Megill completed a bullpen session and is recovering from a right elbow sprain, needing one more session before returning to action.
Jose Iglesias engaged warmly with several Mets players, including Edwin Diaz, Francisco Alvarez, Sean Manaea, and Brandon Nimmo.
