Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) will reportedly rally the Senate Democratic caucus on Friday to call on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Warner has been lobbying Senate Democrats. persuade Biden is withdrawing from the presidential race following a disappointing performance in last week’s presidential debate.
“Like many in Washington and across the country, Senator Warner believes this is a critical time in the presidential campaign and has made that clear to the White House,” Warner spokeswoman Rachel Cohen said in a statement.

One option under consideration is a meeting between senators and Biden at the White House, where proponents say they could express honest concerns directly, even if some senators don’t want Biden to resign. No sitting Democratic senators have publicly called for Biden to resign, but they have been privately sharing their growing concerns with each other over the past week as they fight an already uphill battle to maintain their Senate majority.
The Virginia Democrat, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, is currently seen as a serious voice personally urging the president to step down, and he represents a state Democrats must win in November to maintain control of the White House.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) told his Democratic colleagues they should wait until there is more polling data on how the debate will affect the election.
“I think there’s a recognition among many that the current path may not be sustainable for Trump, not just because of the controversy, but how well he can do in the future. He clearly has to show strength now,” one Senate Democrat said of the current mood in the Senate Democratic Party.
