Eury Perez Aims for Perfection in Game Against Athletics
Eury Perez had his sights set on achieving perfection.
On Sunday, the Marlins played the Athletics in Sacramento, and Perez managed to pitch a flawless seventh inning, totaling 92 pitches. After he took the mound, he retired all 21 batters he faced from the eighth inning onward.
As the game progressed, A’s fans expressed their displeasure, chanting, “Shame!” as the team sought to take Perez out of the game.
His replacement, Lake Bashar, quickly disrupted the perfect game. He allowed a leadoff walk followed by a hit in the eighth inning. Following that, he surrendered five earned runs on four hits before Michael Petersen was brought in to halt the rally.
In the ninth, Pete Fairbanks struggled as well, giving up three runs. The Marlins, despite a strong start, nearly risked losing the 9-0 lead they held for most of the game.
Perez, in just his third start after returning from the disabled list, was mere six outs away from making franchise history with a complete game.
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough expressed mixed feelings after the game. He noted that while there was excitement about Perez’s performance, the team’s long-term success was a priority. “We have to think about Yuri, our organization, and what’s best going forward to keep winning,” he said.
McCullough mentioned that they aimed to be cautious, especially since Perez was already over 90 pitches. “He really hit his stride today,” he added.
The Marlins have been performing well lately, winning nine of their last 12 games and recently sweeping the Athletics. They are statistically tied for the final wild card spot, and All-Star shortstop Otto Lopez was named National League Player of the Week for his impressive performance, including a home run in the exciting Sunday game.
