Behind the Scenes of “Married… with Children”

Christina Applegate and Katey Sagal recently opened up about their time on the hit ’90s show, “Married… with Children,” revealing some startling truths about life on set. Sagal, in a candid moment, expressed how the environment was steeped in sarcasm. “You weren’t really safe,” she explained, describing a place where you could turn your back and hear someone talking about you.

During their discussion on the “Pie” podcast with Kurt Sutter, Applegate shared a moment that particularly struck her. She recalled overhearing a conversation about herself through the dressing room monitor right after she’d left for rehearsal. “I was there just 20 seconds ago,” she remarked, reflecting a sense of vulnerability in an industry often characterized by competition.

Applegate has previously discussed the intense pressure she felt being perceived as a sex symbol throughout her time on the show. This pressure contributed to her development of an eating disorder. In a March episode of her podcast, she revealed the darker aspects of being a child star, stating, “Performing that character wasn’t like anorexia in my mind,” and noted the toll it took on her wellbeing.

She narrated how, during busy shooting days, she would often hide away in the bathroom to eat small portions, fearing judgment for her choices. Sagal chimed in, acknowledging how scrutinized Applegate was as the show’s young sex symbol. “Being a sex symbol at 17 is… challenging,” she noted, characterizing the show as decidedly misogynistic.

Interestingly, Applegate admitted that many of her character’s provocative outfits came from her own suggestions. Initially written as a “tough” and “biker girl,” her character Kelly Bundy transformed under her influence, inspired by a girl featured in a documentary from the early ’80s. “We need to represent this character,” she recalled saying to the wardrobe department.

The series, which aired from 1987 to 1997, revolved around the Bundy family, with Applegate and Sagal sharing the screen with Ed O’Neill and David Faustino. Their reflections serve as a reminder of the complexities of fame, particularly for young women in the entertainment industry.
