Martha Stewart’s Potato Salad Sparks Online Debate

Martha Stewart has sparked quite the conversation on social media with her very basic approach to deli-style potato salad.

On April 3, an old cooking video resurfaced on her Instagram, where she showcases her version of “the best potato salad.” The recipe’s simplicity is striking, calling for just six ingredients: two vegetables, two dressings, and two seasonings.

The core of her recipe includes potatoes, a medium white onion, half a cup of white vinegar, and one cup of Hellmann’s mayonnaise. To complement the flavors, she adds half a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of sugar.

Stewart begins by mixing the onions with white vinegar, salt, and sugar. “Pour this mixture over the potatoes and just swirl,” she advises, explaining that in about ten minutes, the potatoes will soak up the liquid. Afterward, she incorporates the mayonnaise and blends it all with the potatoes.

In the clip, she shares a taste with her mother, stating it’s “so good.” Stewart fondly recalls her childhood in Jersey City, referring to the salad as a “deli-style potato salad.”

Reactions have been mixed; while some feel the salad is too bland, others appreciate its straightforwardness. One user commented, “Wait? Maybe I’m too Southern for these potatoes,” while another stated, “Looks awful,” and a third mentioned there were better recipes out there.

However, there are plenty of positive responses as well. “I’m going to make this potato salad,” one person said enthusiastically. Another chimed in, “This is a great recipe!!! So delicious!”

It’s no surprise that Stewart, who has a vast background in lifestyle content, has stirred up a food debate before. Last summer, she made headlines discussing whether hot dogs should have ketchup, ultimately voicing her fondness for them.

And just last year, playful comments circulated about Stewart’s “unconventional” bagel-eating habits, as she prefers them open-faced, cut into bite-sized pieces with cream cheese.
