Legendary tennis player Martina Navratilova spoke out on Saturday regarding the recent US-Israel attack on Iran. In a post on X, she criticized President Trump, calling him a “psychopath” for authorizing the assault.
Navratilova responded to a post by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, which criticized Trump’s previous walkouts. She commented, “Yeah…Trump is a psychopath. He doesn’t care how many people he’s responsible for killing.”
Additionally, she indicated support for the reported death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, stating, “That would be good news” in reaction to rumors about his demise. Khamenei was confirmed dead on Saturday after the strike on Tehran, which devastated his compound. He had governed the Islamic Republic for over 30 years, leading during times of intense repression and conflict with both the US and Israel.
Previously, Navratilova had joined other athletes, including Riley Gaines, in condemning the Iranian regime, particularly regarding the death sentence handed to boxing champion Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani. She expressed her criticism of Trump after a military attack against Venezuela earlier this year, labeling his actions as “completely illegal” and indicating he had broken more laws than all previous presidents combined.
Her opposition to Trump is influenced by her background as a refugee from Czechoslovakia, where she faced a totalitarian regime. She has often drawn parallels between Trump’s leadership and the authoritarian rule she experienced, reaffirming her stance with past comments on X.
Following the attack on Iran, there has been a push in Congress from both parties to limit Trump’s military powers, with some lawmakers preparing to introduce resolutions aimed at curbing his authority. Senator Tim Kaine has historically advocated for such measures, successfully blocking some military actions until recent Republican opposition curtailed those efforts.
In the House, Representatives Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna are also crafting resolutions to exert similar limits. Meanwhile, Trump has called on the Iranian people to gain control of their government, claiming it’s their best chance to reclaim their homeland.
He remarked that many members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and police are seeking to avoid conflict, emphasizing that peace should precede military actions. President Trump noted that “massive and pinpoint bombing will continue” as necessary to establish peace in the region.
