Maryland bridge collapse: Fast facts about the Port of Baltimore

The Port of Baltimore began adjusting operations Tuesday after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River.

A large container ship collided with a support early Tuesday morning, causing a bridge leading to the Port of Baltimore to fall. Search and rescue operations are currently underway.

“We would like to express our deepest thoughts to the individuals and families involved in this morning’s tragic incident,” the Port of Baltimore said in a statement on social media Tuesday morning.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore also declared a state of emergency in response to the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident.

More than 50 carriers make nearly 1,800 calls at the Port of Baltimore each year, according to the Maryland State Archives.

In 2023, a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo passed through the port. According to the Maryland Governor’s Office, this ranks it ninth among major U.S. ports in that category.

Leader in specific cargo handling

According to the governor’s office, no other U.S. port handled as much “import cargo” last year as the Port of Baltimore, including “automobiles and light trucks, roll-on and off farm and construction equipment, imported sugar and imported gypsum.” No. 1 for passenger cars and light trucks for 13 consecutive years.

The state’s major economic driver

The port is a major source of economic activity for Maryland, generating more than $2.6 billion in business revenue, according to a report from the Maryland State Archives. It would also generate nearly $400 million in tax revenue.

Recruitment

The Port of Baltimore created approximately 15,300 direct jobs. More broadly, the work has helped provide jobs for about 140,000 people, according to the governor’s office.

Maryland attributes approximately $3.3 billion in total personal revenue to its ports.

Over 3 centuries of history

This port has been in existence for over 300 years. According to the Maryland State Archives, it facilitated trade with early England and later expanded to other parts of the world.
