Maryland county sheriff renews efforts to solve serial rape cold case

Law enforcement officials say Maryland detectives are back on the hunt and identify men who have targeted women who targeted their targets more than 25 years ago, and are allegedly trying to do so or rape them.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office resumed a cold case between November 1996 and August 2003 with a serial rapist who allegedly greeted women in Washington, D.C. and Prince George, Maryland, counties, and picked up women before they were taken to Charles County. Once there, the unknown man is said to have physically attacked him and sexually assaulted the victim.

Investigators describe the suspect as a black man who was thought to be in his late 30s to early 50s at the time of the crime, but could now be in his 50s to 70s to 70s.

The suspect reportedly used the names Jerry, Jimmy, George and James.

Investigators say the suspects had access to multiple vehicles, including a 1996 Green Lime Ford pickup truck, a red station wagon, Ford Pinto, Escorts, red passenger cars like Toyota, some Maryland tags FG-549, 594, or 546, and Teal Passenger vehicles.

In an article in the Maryland Independent on April 25, 2003, the Charles County Sheriff's Office said the 39-year-old woman had accepted a ride from a man driving the late-model Teal model Buix Skylark since midnight on April 14th.

After the man went to pick up the woman, he drove her to Brian's Road in Charles County, where he raped her in a car and later dropped her off in the parking lot of a nearby townhouse development.

Law enforcement officials said there were similarities between April 14th and 10 other 10 crimes that occurred since September 1996.

“We are very confident that these cases are the same person,” said the captain at the time. “The Charles County Sheriff's Office,” said Joseph Montminy at the time. “I think there are probably other cases that have not been reported.”

The survey found that in each case the victim was an African-American woman between the ages of 18 and 45, and was alone.

The victim told investigators that the suspect either ordered the woman to the car at the muzzle or offered a ride to lure him into the car.

The publication reported that the suspect allegedly locked the woman inside the vehicle before driving to Charles County. The two women reportedly accepted the ride and fell asleep, but only woke up in Charles County.

Another victim reportedly told investigators she was kept in a headlock until she grabbed the steering wheel and drove the vehicle into a groove.

Physical evidence had been collected as of the 2003 article, but investigators hoped it could be used to link suspects to the attack.

Using forensic evidence and investigators linked multiple cases to suspects and identified him as a violent continuity offender.
