The campaign committee of a former Maryland gubernatorial candidate has been fined $2,000 for sending campaign materials without identifying authority, state prosecutors announced.
The campaign committee for Governor John King has been fined for sending campaign materials to at least two Maryland Education Association directors ahead of the state’s 2022 primary election.

Dr. King ran in the Democratic primary. The winner of this election was Wes Moore, who went on to win the same year’s gubernatorial election.

The campaign materials cited by state prosecutors are related to Moore’s career, the state attorney’s office said.
Maryland law requires campaign messages sent by campaign financing entities to include the name and address of each campaign financing entity’s treasurer responsible for campaign materials. The law also requires that when campaign materials are published by individuals, those responsible for distributing the materials must be identified.
State Attorney Charlton Howard said in a news release Wednesday that there were no agency lines or information indicating the emails or attachments were sent or paid for by Gov. John King’s campaign. .

The Baltimore Banner reported that Moore’s campaign filed a complaint with the state, alleging that King’s campaign used an anonymous email account to disseminate an opponent’s research critical of Moore. The email contained a 12-page document attempting to discredit Moore’s Baltimore roots.
