Wes Moore Discusses Future Political Plans
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Maryland Governor Wes Moore (D) surprised host Kristen Welker with his comments on a potential presidential run for 2028.
There’s been a buzz about whether Moore might enter the presidential race, especially since he’s up for reelection in 2026. When Welker inquired if he would complete his term if reelected, he affirmed his commitment. However, he also indicated that if he does not pursue the presidency, he would be not running for that position this upcoming election.
“Yes, I’m looking forward to being reelected. I’m thrilled about what I can achieve for the people of Maryland,” Moore stated.
When pressed by Welker about ruling out a presidential run, Moore responded firmly, “Yes, I’m not running for president.” He then emphasized his intention to focus on governing Maryland.
“We’re genuinely excited about the progress we’ve made, moving from 43rd in unemployment to a much better place. The state is thriving,” he continued, acknowledging Maryland’s growth and a notable decline in violent crime.
As of July 2025, Maryland’s unemployment rate stood at 3.4%, which is among the lower rates in the country. Baltimore recorded its lowest murder rate in a decade last year, although the state’s overall violent crime rate remains 17.1% above the national average.
Moore’s name has surfaced among those speculated to potentially seek the Democratic nomination in 2028. Other notable figures include Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, California Governor Gavin Newsom, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Vice President Kamala Harris. Additionally, it seems that Congressman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is contemplating a run as well.
A recent poll highlighted some shifting dynamics among potential candidates, with a significant portion of respondents expressing support for various figures, but Moore did not make the list.
