Maryland man accused of killing girlfriend, stashing body in ‘makeshift tomb’

A Capitol Heights, Maryland, man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting his girlfriend and then trying to hide her body in a “makeshift grave” inside his home, police said.

Devonte Gray, 30, has been charged with first-degree murder and other related charges in the death of Alexis Schuler, 29, of Washington, D.C., the Prince George's Police Department said in a news release.

On January 18, the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department contacted police in Prince George's County seeking assistance in a missing persons case involving Schuler, who had been reported missing earlier this week.

On Saturday, the Prince George's Police Department executed a search warrant at Gray's home as part of the investigation.

Police said investigators found a body believed to be Schuler's inside Gray's home after Gray made “extensive efforts” to hide the body.

Police said Gray was arrested at the scene and is suspected of confessing to Schuler's murder.

On Tuesday, police announced that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner had determined that Schuler was shot to death.
