A Maryland Senate committee voted Monday night to endorse a Republican candidate for the state elections board to replace the former board member who resigned this year after being accused of participating in the January 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol. did.
The vote by the Senate Executive Nominating Committee will send Diane Butler’s nomination to the full Senate for a confirmation vote.

Commissioners said they would be more careful in the process of approving state election officials. They asked similar questions of Democratic lawmakers nominated to positions overseeing the election process. They also asked Butler about her beliefs in the integrity of the state’s election system.

Butler is a former member of the Howard County Board of Elections.
Because the current governor is a Democrat, three of the five members of the Maryland State Board of Elections are Democrats. The Maryland Republican Party selected the remaining two members to submit to the governor, who sent Butler’s nomination to a Senate committee.
