Violent Robbery on Manhattan Train
A masked attacker assaulted a 29-year-old woman on a Manhattan subway late Wednesday night. The incident reportedly occurred when the robber demanded her bag and, upon refusal, proceeded to slash her several times.
Law enforcement officials stated that the suspect, wearing a surgical mask, boarded the northbound train No. 3 at Wall Street Station around 11:10 PM. When the woman declined to relinquish her bag, he brandished a knife and attacked her, inflicting wounds to her left arm and back.
After the assault, the assailant grabbed her cell phone and fled the scene. The woman was promptly taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she remained in stable condition.
NYPD released surveillance footage of the suspect, who was seen walking through the train car wearing a navy hoodie, black pants, and shoes. Descriptions indicate he may be in his 20s, approximately 5 feet 11 inches, with a dark complexion and slender build.
This violent incident follows another troubling event just a day earlier, where a stranger attacked a 25-year-old woman at the Chelsea’s 23rd Street C and E stations without provocation.
Authorities later identified the assailant as 21-year-old Carlos Rivera. Reports indicate he attacked a woman around 6:30 PM on Tuesday, stabbing her in the back. She is also recovering in stable condition.
Rivera was apprehended by a Manhattan robbery squad that same night and faces charges including attempted murder and multiple assaults. Interestingly, he had previous arrests, including one in Brooklyn for allegedly stealing a man’s clothing in Queens on June 24.
This series of subway incidents arrives after NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish noted that July had been “the safest in our subway system in recorded history.”
