Masked Protesters Against Israel Enter Columbia University Library Before Finals Week

Protesters Invade Columbia University Library Amidst Final Exam Preparations

A significant number of anti-Israel demonstrators gathered in the Columbia University library, disrupting students who were busy preparing for their upcoming final exams.

Videos circulating on social media captured the moments activists bypassed security at Butler Library’s entrance.

Once inside, the crowd made their presence known by displaying a large banner, declaring the space a “free zone.” One participant notably held up a sign bearing the name of Bassel Al-Aladi, a Palestinian activist linked to alleged plans for attacks against Israeli targets.

In another tweet, reports indicated that the library was again occupied by protesters, who chanted phrases like “from the river to the sea” and distributed materials associated with Hamas while confronting students just as finals approached.

An emailed statement from the protesting group expressed that the library had been “inundated” with their activities, asserting that the disruption reflected ongoing resistance to perceived imperialism linked to the institution.

The group’s message emphasized, “As long as Columbia benefits from imperialist violence, we will continue to challenge its interests and legitimacy. Each act of repression fosters further resistance.”

Additionally, protesters shared a list of demands, including calls to end “Zionist occupation and apartheid,” along with requests for pardons of students facing disciplinary actions.

They were seen engaging in rhythmic chants, promoting the “Free, Free Palestine” slogan. Notably, this protest coincides with the week leading up to finals, as students were preparing for exams scheduled to resume on May 21st after previous disruptions.
