Arrest in the Shooting of 14-Year-Old Washington, D.C. Girl

The family of a 14-year-old girl from Washington, D.C., whose death was initially thought to be a self-inflicted shooting, is feeling a sense of relief following an arrest in connection with her case. Zytina Mason-Brown’s family had long maintained that she did not take her own life.

Authorities have taken a 17-year-old male into custody, stating he was present in the apartment at the time of Mason-Brown’s fatal shooting. Her grandmother, Michelle Brown, expressed her complex feelings about the arrest, saying, “I don’t want to say happy because it’s not a joyous occasion… but I’m feeling satisfied that D.C. police did apprehend the suspect. And they did their job on this one.”

This development is a significant shift in a case that raised doubts for Mason-Brown’s family from the start. The eighth grader, who had aspirations of being a beautician and real estate agent, was shot on May 21, 2025, within the Benning Courts Pentacle complex located near Hechinger Mall.

Initially, police labeled the incident as an accident, theorizing she had shot herself while making a video for social media. However, her family’s unwavering belief in her innocence led them to challenge that narrative.

Months later, the D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner classified Mason-Brown’s death as a homicide in August 2025. Her aunt, Dawna Cooke, expressed gratitude toward the police for their commitment to the case, stating, “We knew that Zytina did not kill herself… and I really want to thank the Metropolitan Police Department for fighting so hard to come to the conclusion and get the suspect in custody.”

Information regarding the identity of the 17-year-old suspect and any forthcoming court appearances has yet to be revealed, in accordance with juvenile privacy laws.
