Mass Immigration is Driving Up Rents for Americans

The admission of millions of foreigners, many of them illegal, under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris has led to higher rent costs for working- and middle-class Americans, expert witnesses testified before Congress on Wednesday.

Steven Camarota, Research Director, Center for Immigration Studies said The House Oversight Committee argues that immigration levels are intrinsically linked to housing costs, especially in recent years, as studies have shown that higher immigration levels tend to lead to higher rents for Americans.

“According to Census Bureau data, the number of immigrant-headed households has increased by 2.4 million since January 2021, with perhaps 1.4 million of that increase being due to undocumented immigration,” Camarota said.

Previous studies have shown that immigration increases housing demand. [sic] Costs in the areas where immigrants settle. My analysis finds that a recent 5 percentage point increase in a metropolitan area's immigrant share of the population is associated with a 12 percent increase in average rent for U.S.-born households.compared to income. However, further analysis is needed to fully explore this relationship. [Emphasis added]

Camarota said household data on migrants who arrived in the U.S. between January 2022 and August 2024 showed that nine in 10 people said they lived in rented housing.

“Having so much population coming into the country will increase demand for rental units, which should have a significant impact on home prices… The Census Bureau reported that 2023 rent increases were by far the largest in the past decade,” Camarota said. This is certainly an immigrantIncluding illegal immigrants Home prices have risen sharply In areas with large immigrant populations.” [Emphasis added]

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), former President Donald Trump's running mate, has long raised the issue of mass immigration causing skyrocketing housing costs for Americans.

Recent Rally Speaking in Raleigh, North Carolina, Vance said President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have “flooded the country with people competing with you for cheap labor and housing,” making housing “completely out of reach for young Americans.”

Another Interview “When we allow millions of immigrants in, we are giving up homes that should belong to Americans to foreigners,” Vance said in an interview with Spectrum News.

“This will put a huge strain on Americans' ability to buy a home,” Vance continued.

It will also increase housing costs for Americans. We've been talking about this for months, but the American media has largely ignored it – until some of the more outlandish claims from Springfield residents began to rise to the top of the national conversation. [Emphasis added]

Inflation has slowed somewhat, but home prices have yet to follow suit. Report An Axios article details how economists believe much of the current inflation is being driven by persistently high housing costs that don't seem to be coming down anytime soon.

“It is reasonable to assume that recent influxes of immigrants have led to an increase in the percentage of Americans struggling to buy a home in many immigrant-rich areas,” Camarota said in his testimony.
