Mass shooting at Miss. homecoming leaves 3 dead, 8 injured: sheriff

In Lexington, Michigan, a homecoming celebration turned deadly when two men opened fire on a crowd, wounding eight people and killing three.

Two 19-year-old boys and a 25-year-old boy were killed when bullets sprayed into a crowd of several hundred people gathered after the Holmes County Unified Schools homecoming football game early Friday night.

Eight injured people were taken to area hospitals, some of whom were airlifted to the capital, Jackson, 60 miles south of the scene of the shooting. According to the Associated Press.

Around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, an argument escalated and at least two youths opened fire on a crowd of 300 youths, Holmes County Sheriff Willie March told the outlet.

Johnson said there is usually a security guard at events on the Indian Creek Trail, and they have previously confiscated weapons, but this time the guard was allowed to pass. The sound of the gunfire “sounded like a machine gun,” he told WAPT.

The Clarion-Ledger reported that investigators believe the gunmen used a gun equipped with a “switch” that turned a semi-automatic handgun into a selective-fire machine pistol.

“Now that I've been ordained as a pastor, I want to talk to young people and tell them to love each other.”

“It's just the mercy of God that they weren't shot,” Johnson said of his wounded nephew and son, who was at the scene.
