A shooting near a funeral home in Baltimore County, Maryland, left one person dead and nine others injured Tuesday night, county officials said.
Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough said officers responded to a report of shots fired on Raven Lake Boulevard around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. The scene was near the Johnson Funeral Home in the Towson area, said Baltimore County Fire Chief Joe Dixon.
At the scene, officers found the vehicle lying on fire. McCullough said it appears he was involved in an accident in which a vehicle crashed and burst into flames, but further details were not available.
The county fire department was contacted and found 10 victims in the area, one dead and nine injured. Most of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, the police chief said.
The nine surviving victims were taken to a regional trauma center in unknown circumstances. Details of casualties and injuries were not immediately available.
McCullough said the department is investigating the circumstances of the shooting, which appears to be targeted and isolated.
“[It] “It appears that the individuals in this case knew each other in some way,” McCullough said. “This incident was intentional and targeted.”
No arrests had been made in connection with the shooting as of Tuesday night.
“We will do everything in our power and put every resource into this,” he promised. “We don't typically see this type of thing in communities in Baltimore County. This is an isolated incident.”
Responding Baltimore County firefighters were able to extinguish the vehicle fire and assist the victims at the scene before transporting them, Dixon said.
The fire chief said, “I'm proud of our response,'' and emphasized the cooperation between police and fire departments.
County Executive Johnny Olszewski, the incoming member of Maryland's 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, also attended the press conference and said he was shocked by the deadly shooting.
“This is a shocking incident, especially for those of us who live in Baltimore County. This type of incident is unprecedented here, so it's really shocking to anyone who is conscious,” he said.
He added that the county is “fully committed” to ensuring both police and fire departments have adequate support and resources during the active investigation.
