Massachusetts flag redesign features Dunkin' logos and submissions of velociraptors

The Massachusetts flag redesign initiative has attracted a variety of creative submissions, ranging from traditional symbols like pine trees and cod to more whimsical designs featuring Dunkin’ Donuts and lobsters. A significant aim of this project, which was initially launched last year, is to refresh the state’s symbol to better represent contemporary values.

With the submission deadline having passed on June 18th, the committee is now reviewing hundreds of entries. These submissions reflect the complex history and identity of Massachusetts, merging respect for the past with a hopeful outlook for the future.

While some designs stick to common themes—like the USS Constitution or Mayflower ships—others take a playful turn. A notable entry features a Dunkin’ logo alongside rainbow sprinkles, while another presents a lighthearted phrase: “Massachusetts: No witch since 1693.” It seems there’s a blend of humor and awareness throughout many of the submissions.

Interestingly, some entries try to strike a balance between tradition and innovation. For instance, proposals that aim to remove certain elements, like the sword above the native figure, while keeping other iconic aspects, showcase a desire for both continuity and change. Some slogans, such as “Born Equal and Equality,” echo historical principles attributed to key figures like John Adams.

Massachusetts officials are keen to embrace submissions that range from the serious to the slightly absurd. Kate Fox, the committee’s co-chair, emphasized the need for symbols that reflect the state’s current diverse community. The next steps involve narrowing down the entries to three finalists in each category, followed by public hearings to finalize the recommendations.

Whether embracing playful dinosaur motifs or depicting coffee in the designs, Massachusetts is set to unveil one of the most entertaining flag redesigns in the nation. A comprehensive view of all design submissions is available online.
