Massachusetts high school student fixes his own school bus after he saw it broken down by the side of the road

If a typical high school student saw a broken down school bus on the side of the road, they might just drive by, or point and laugh. But Gavin Nutty, a third-year student at Essex North Shore Agricultural Technology School in Danvers, thought, he should stop to help. Instead of just calling the police and saving the bus from a collision, he actually repaired the bus by replacing the serpentine belt himself.

According to WBZ-TV, the bus Natti stopped to help was not his school district’s bus, but the same bus he regularly takes to school. His bus driver was understandably surprised to see one of his regular customers pull over and offer to help. Nattie, who was in the school’s car program, told the driver she thought she could solve the problem. The driver, who had already radioed the district’s head bus mechanic, radioed back to let the district know the student wanted an opportunity to resolve the issue.

“The dispatcher told me about the student in the field, and she was really excited for him to try it out. So I said, ‘Okay, let’s try a little bit.’ ”

Natty noticed that the bus was overheating and quickly determined that a frayed serpentine belt was causing the problem. “I lifted the hood and saw that everything that keeps the water pump running, the fans running, the bus running, and keeping it running had basically been torn in half,” Natti told WBZ. Nattie tried to find a replacement part, but couldn’t find a suitable belt at a local store, so district mechanic Jay Weaver brought it over and finished the job.

The next day, Natty rides the bus to school and finds a proud driving teacher named Brooks Clark. “We teach them everything from brakes to suspension to checking the engine light. The education students receive here prepares them for the workforce. Gavin is an exemplary student and a good citizen. It embodies what it means to be.”

Natti told WBZ that after he graduates, he wants to start his own car business and help as many people as possible.
