Massachusetts Doctor Faces Over 80 New Charges
A doctor in Massachusetts, already facing numerous allegations including rape and assault, has now been indicted on more than 80 additional charges. This comes from his time working as both a rheumatologist and a general practitioner at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.
Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced on Tuesday that Dr. Derrick Todd has been charged with 21 counts of rape, 59 counts of indecent assault and battery, and one count of assault with intent to commit rape.
This new indictment significantly broadens the existing case against Todd, which already included a wide range of allegations across various locations. The sheer number of accusations paints a troubling picture of alleged misconduct involving numerous patients over several years.
According to the charges, Todd is alleged to have conducted unnecessary breast and pelvic exams on patients during his tenure at both Brigham and Women’s Hospital and its Faulkner branch.
Prosecutors have indicated that the incidents took place between 2017 and 2023, affecting 22 victims whose ages ranged from 17 to 56.
“This is an extraordinary set of indictments,” Hayden remarked at a news conference, emphasizing the alarming volume of victims and the fact that they were assaulted by a healthcare professional—someone they trusted during vulnerable times.
At this time, Hayden has not provided additional comments to inquiries.
Defense attorney Ingrid Martin, representing Todd, stated that they have not yet received information regarding the new charges and therefore cannot comment.
Todd previously pleaded not guilty to a set of 22 counts related to similar allegations in Middlesex County. The new charges filed in Suffolk County are separate from those earlier cases.
Additionally, Todd is involved in several ongoing medical malpractice lawsuits, with hundreds of former patients joining a class action complaint filed in 2024.
Hayden noted that the situation surrounding Todd is unprecedented: “The scale of the harm and trauma resulting from these allegations is unlike anything we have experienced before.” He added that Todd’s arraignment on the new charges will occur in Suffolk Superior Court at a later date.
The district attorney expressed gratitude to the victims who have bravely come forward over the years, aiding the prosecution’s efforts to build their cases. Hayden concluded by assuring survivors, “We will support you and stand by you every step of the way.”
