Massachusetts private school educator suspended after student gets STI, others claim 'inappropriate physical contact'

A teacher at a private Jewish school in Massachusetts has been put on leave following a report that a young student tested positive for a sexually transmitted disease. There are also allegations involving at least two other students who reportedly experienced “inappropriate physical contact” with the same teacher.

This unidentified male teacher from Solomon Schechter Day School was placed on administrative leave on October 31, as local reports indicate. The incident came to light when one of his students contracted an STI.

After the teacher’s departure, two additional families expressed concerns that their children had encountered inappropriate touching by him during the last school year, as outlined in an email dated January 15 to the school community.

Principal Rebecca Lurie and board president Eitan Shamash confirmed that the toddler tested positive for a sexually transmitted disease in October. It’s worth noting that the symptoms of such infections can appear within a few days to several weeks, depending on various factors.

The school communicated that the matter was immediately reported to police and child safety authorities, initiating an investigation based on the child’s age and the disease involved, which suggested that abuse was quite possible.

The age of the child has not been disclosed, but it’s important to mention that students in this school range from preschool to third grade.

Diana Pisciotta, a spokesperson for the school, mentioned that the teacher was placed on leave the very same day the student’s family disclosed the STI along with additional details about inappropriate contact.

Authorities are still conducting an investigation; however, preliminary findings have not identified evidence of abuse within the school, according to Pisciotta. The school has engaged Aleta Law Firm for an external inquiry as well.

In a public statement, the school acknowledged the unsettling nature of the situation and expressed a commitment to learning from it to bolster their practices.

Both the Department of Children and Families and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office are actively looking into the allegations.

The school reiterated its cooperation with ongoing investigations, stressing that no definitive conclusions have been drawn yet regarding the infection’s source or potential culpability.

Currently, there have been no criminal charges against the teachers involved, as per the district attorney’s office.

Solomon Schechter Day School is recognized as the largest Jewish day school in the Boston area.

In a related note, an expelled teacher from another Solomon Schechter school in Connecticut recently pleaded guilty to charges related to inappropriate conduct with a student, highlighting a troubling pattern. Reports indicate this teacher had faced multiple arrests for similar issues prior to being placed on leave.
