Massapequa Wrestling Aims for State Title
The focus for the Massapequa wrestling team is clear: winning the state title.
After claiming the Nassau County championship, they are preparing for a crucial matchup this weekend in Syracuse, New York. This will be against some of the top programs in the state during the New York Division I dual meet finals.
“I think we’re set up well,” said Chiefs head coach Mike McCann. “We’re ready to give it our all and leave everything on the mat.”
McCann noted that depth is a vital element of their success, especially this season with a strong squad of 45 wrestlers. “We’ve got guys who could easily be on the podium, even if they’ve finished second or third before,” he mentioned, adding that they haven’t repeated the same lineup all year.
The team boasts experienced senior leaders like Luke Anderson (126 pounds), Joe Brooks (157 pounds), Mike Murphy (165 pounds), and James Mulhern (285 pounds), who enhance the team’s chemistry. Freshman John Tutoku, who previously won a state title in junior high at 110 pounds, and Kai Tillinger, a former county champion wrestling at 150 pounds, also bolster their chances.
“I really think we’re in the discussion,” McCann reflected.
USMMA’s Thrilling Victory
Back in November, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy pulled off a dramatic victory in the Secretary’s Cup against their rival, Coast Guard, winning 38-33 at Fenway Park.
This nail-biting finish has been a topic of conversation across the nation. It ranked No. 69 on ESPN’s list of the top 100 college football games of the year.
During the game, a 70-yard drive took them deep into Coast Guard territory, and with less than a minute remaining, they faced a critical fourth-and-1 decision at the Coast Guard 20-yard line.
Quarterback Bubba Mustaine took the snap and managed to secure the first down. They continued pushing forward until they were at the 7-yard line with only 20 seconds left on the clock.
Mustaine made a decisive move again, skillfully navigating through defenders to secure the winning touchdown, sealing an exhilarating 39-38 victory against a strong Connecticut team.
