Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) had a sarcastic response on Friday after President Donald Trump labeled him an “idiot” during a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. In a text to a news outlet, Massie quipped, “I’m happy to know I’m in the president’s prayers.”
During his speech, Trump critiqued Massie’s voting behavior, suggesting he often opposes policies favored by fellow House Republicans. He remarked, “There’s something wrong with him. We call him Rand Paul Jr.,” referencing Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).
Trump expressed frustration, saying, “They love to vote no.” In defense of his actions, Massie articulated, “This morning at the National Prayer Breakfast, the President of the United States called me an idiot because I am still fighting for the promises he made to the American people.” He cited issues such as reducing excessive spending, avoiding new wars, and protecting various amendments.
Massie, known for his fiscal conservatism, shared on his campaign platform that while he typically votes Republican, he diverges when he feels it’s detrimental to the nation, stating, “91% of the time I will vote Republican in DC because 9% of the time they are bankrupting our country, starting new wars, and covering up pedophiles.”
In another development, Trump has endorsed Ed Gullane, who is challenging Massie in the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District. Trump accused Massie of being disloyal to the President and the party, asserting, “He is a complete and utter disaster. We must make sure he loses, big man!”
Trump also claimed that some believe Massie has become more liberal due to his recent marriage, labeling him an unreliable Republican. Interestingly, Massie’s new marriage comes after the passing of his first wife in 2024.
Massie didn’t hold back in responding, pointing out that Trump had previously attacked his wife, who has supported him during tough times, remarking that perhaps Trump’s comments stem from various misunderstandings.
