Now we all have heard of land solar farms, but overwater? Now, India has just opened Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park, the largest floating solar park in Madhya Pradesh.
This ambitious project is creating waves in the renewable energy sector and marks a key milestone in India's goal for a green future. Located in a vast reservoir, the park illustrates the country's innovative approach to harnessing solar power while conserving important resources.

Sun Oasis in the heart of India
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) It achieved a very impressive engineering feat that is as impressive as it is innovative. TPREL's 126 MW floating solar project features 213,460 double-sided glass to glass modules spread over 260 hectares (642 acres) of water between Indirasa Girl and Omkareshwar's hydroelectric reservoirs. These advanced panels are expected to generate 204,580 MWH of clean energy each year, sufficient to run thousands of homes across the region.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a global leader in renewable energy solutions, also played an important role in the Omkareshwar floating solar park. L&T successfully commissioned a 90 MW floating solar power plant as part of the project. This important contribution highlights L&T's expertise in leveraging renewable energy and commitment to sustainable development.

More than just a solar panel
The Omkareshwar project doesn't just put solar panels in water. This installation incorporates a robust mooring system, wave breakers and ballast anchors to ensure stability in a variety of conditions. The flexible cableway allows the structure to adapt to fluctuating water levels and strong winds. Additionally, the project hosts the world's largest floating inverter platform and sets a global benchmark for floating solar technology.

No EV charging stations needed again with these rooftop solar panels
It's advantageous for both the energy and the environment
The advantages of this floating solar wonder far exceed clean electricity production. By shading the reservoir, the plants can significantly reduce water evaporation and help to save valuable resources. The project saves about 32.5 million cubic meters of water per year. The use of water bodies for energy production frees up land for agriculture and other important uses. Furthermore, TPREL's 126 MW project is set to offset an astounding 173,893 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, making a significant contribution to India's climate targets.
