Death of Math Teacher at Maryland Elementary School

A 75-year-old math teacher was discovered deceased inside a Maryland elementary school over the weekend, according to officials.

Deborah Tolson, a math interventionist at Arundel Elementary School in Baltimore, was found in the school building. The principal, Kellyanne Malcolm, confirmed the news.

Tolson had dedicated 23 years to teaching within the Baltimore City Public Schools and spent the last seven years at Arundel Elementary. Malcolm expressed her condolences in a letter, noting that, “Ms. Tolson was a much-loved member of our school community for seven years. She was a pillar and loved by both students and staff.”

The Baltimore Police Department reported that investigators found no signs of trauma or foul play surrounding Tolson’s death. Her body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office to ascertain the cause of death.

Malcolm indicated that students at the school were released at 10:15 a.m. on Monday.

“Our hearts and thoughts are with Ms. Tolson’s family, friends, and the entire school community during this challenging time,” Malcolm remarked, adding that they were still gathering details and would provide updates as available. The district is also implementing measures to support students and staff who are grieving.

“The Baltimore City Public Schools Crisis Management Team will keep assisting our schools, addressing any questions or concerns from students and staff,” Malcolm stated.

It remains unclear when school officials became aware of Tolson’s presence or whether any students were present when her body was found. Additional information has been sought from the Baltimore City Police Department, the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner, and Arundel Elementary School.
