Matt Gaetz Demands DHS Provide Records of Harris Cited as ‘Border Czar’

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) has asked the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to release all documents that refer to Vice President Kamala Harris as a “border czar,” Breitbart News exclusively reported Wednesday.

Since President Joe Biden tasked Harris in March 2021 to “lead efforts with Mexico, the Northern Triangle and other countries that need our assistance to stem the flow of people and stop migration to our southern border,” mainstream media has referred to Harris as the “border czar” at least eight times.

To clear up the confusion, Mr. Gaetz wrote a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas demanding that he clarify all communications within the department in which he used the words “emperor,” “border,” “immigration” or “migrant” to refer to Ms. Harris.

(1) All communications between March 24, 2021 and March 24, 2022 between the Office of the Vice President and Department of Homeland Security officials (including deployees) that use the terms “emperor,” “border,” “immigration,” or “immigration.”

(2) in any Department of Homeland Security (including dispatch) communications from March 24, 2021 through March 24, 2022, referring to Vice President Kamala Harris or the Office of the Vice President as “czar” or “leader” or using other language within the formal or informal chain of command related to border policy issues;

(3) Department of Homeland Security internal directives or guidance from 2021 to the present that refer to the Vice President or the Office of the Vice President having formal or informal authorization, approval, or stakeholder input regarding a Department decision.

Gaetz asked Mayorkas to provide the information by Aug. 30, 2024.
