Seahawks Prepare for Fourth Super Bowl Appearance
The Seattle Seahawks are set to compete in the Super Bowl for the fourth time, facing off against the New England Patriots this Sunday.
The team’s first Super Bowl was Super Bowl XL back in 2006, where under the leadership of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, they ended the regular season with an impressive 13-3 record. Unfortunately, that inaugural game did not end in their favor, as they lost 21-10 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In that match, Hasselbeck completed 26 of 49 passes, totaling 273 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Reflecting on that experience in a recent conversation, Hasselbeck expressed that there was one aspect he wished he could have changed.
“I don’t think there was anything we would have done differently other than not losing our composure. We had some calls that didn’t go our way, and we lost our composure with the umpire. We didn’t regain our composure before the play clock hit 40 seconds,” he recounted.
He mentioned throwing an interception during that crucial moment, which compounded his frustration when he was penalized for tackling the defender post-interception. “That really upset me,” he stated.
Hasselbeck, a three-time Pro Bowler, noted that he learned to take things step by step. The lessons learned from that significant loss proved beneficial not just in sports, but also in his role as a father.
“If something foolish happens in your mind, just move on. I think that mindset has really helped me both as an athlete and as a dad. For instance, when we get in the car after a game, I’m not allowed to talk about referees. It’s a lesson I had to learn the hard way,” he shared.
Despite the setback in Super Bowl XL, the Seahawks returned to the championship stage in the 2013 season, triumphing over the Denver Broncos 43-8 for their first title. They faced the Patriots again the following season, only to lose 28-24, thanks to a last-minute interception by Russell Wilson.
Now, the current Seahawks squad is eager to balance their Super Bowl record and seek redemption for that close loss to the Patriots over a decade ago.
The Seahawks are set to play the Patriots on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
